Giacomo Rizzolatti

Giacomo Rizzolatti graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the University of Padua where he also obtained a specialization in Neurology. He is a member of the Accademia dei Lincei, the Academia Europaea, the Académie Francaise des Sciences, and is an Honorary Foreign Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was recently elected to the National Academy of Science, USA and was awarded the Prince of Asturias Prize for Science, Spain’s most prestigious scientific award. He has received honorary degrees from the Claude Bernard University of Lyon, the University of St. Petersburg, and the University of Leuven. Giacomo Rizzolatti discovered the mirror neurons, whose involvement is implicated in neurocognitive functions (social cognition, language, empathy, theory of mind). The mirror neuron system (MNS) is being studied all over the world because the lack of MNS activity could be the root cause of antisocial behavior and psychic disorders. See CV complete.
